Sam Adams & Ben Franklin

Sam is the mature eastern Screech Owl where Ben is just 10 weeks old. Sam suffered blunt trauma to the right eye.  The Head trauma was so severe that he also suffered a total hearing loss.  Sam loves to sit on the highest perch in his mews and watch everything around him.  Ben was found in a fallen tree with 2 other siblings.  He suffers from a visual impairment that he was born with, termed micro-ophthalmia.

His eyes never developed to their normal size and his pupils respond only slightly to light.  He was hand fed for 3 weeks at Red Creek Wildlife Center where it was determined that his disability would not allow him to survive successfully on his own in the wild.  Sam and Ben can be found keeping each other company on the same perch waiting for a quiet opportunity to take an afternoon nap

Sitting Bull

This adult Great Horned Owl is a survivor of West Nile Virus.  It has been almost four years since the owl was found in a Carbon County resident’s back yard covered in burs, starving and unable to fly.  Sue Gallagher, the director of the Carbon County Environmental Education Center was uncertain about the owl’s survival as all other victims that year has died from the disease.  A strong will from both the rehabbing staff and the owl were the right combination and he survived.   As a result of the virus Sitting Bull has had a substantial loss of sight and partial loss of hearing.  The disease has also caused the owl a weakness in the shafts of his flight and tail feathers.  He can be found most days on his favorite perch looking into the woods!

Geronimo

As an adult, Geronimo was hit by a car, injuring his right wing.  He lost complete mobility and after surgery was unable to hold in its normal position.  Geronimo was held for 3 years as the Carbon County staff was diligently trying to find a home for this noble raptor.  It was thought that Sitting Bull and Geronimo would be good companions for each other at Mill Grove as they had been cage mates for almost 2 years at Carbon County’s rehabbing facility.  Geronimo, like some other owls in captivity, has a sweet tooth!  Can you guess what part of his prey is his favorite?
